Spotlight #2 – Andreas Broeckmann

IMAGO-Cultures Visuelles team is very pleased to invite you to its second Spotlight seminar session, taking place on Monday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) in Paris (and streamed live on Zoom).

We will welcome Dr. habil. Andreas Broeckmann, who will present in English his new book The Making of Les Immatériaux, a publication marking the 40th anniversary of this landmark exhibition, which took place in Paris in the spring of 1985. In this presentation, Broeckmann will introduce some of the book’s main themes – including his analysis of the unrealised projects (“projets pas choisis”).

The Making of Les Immatériaux (Meson Press, 2025), provides the first comprehensive account of the preparations of Les Immatériaux, detailing how the exhibition emerged from collaborations in such diverse fields as contemporary art, architecture, science, and network media. Originally held at the Centre Pompidou in the spring of 1985 and curated by philosopher Jean-François Lyotard and design theoretician Thierry Chaput, Les Immatériaux is widely regarded as a landmark in postmodern philosophy and in discourses around art, science, and digital culture.

Dr. habil. Andreas Broeckmann is an art historian and curator who lives in Berlin. He is a Visiting Professor in the PhD Program at Malmö Art Academy, and he teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig (HGB – Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) where he holds an Honorary Professorship, and was Visiting Professor for Art History and Media Theory (2017–2020). He is a private lecturer at Leuphana University Lüneburg and is engaged in the research and documentation project Les Immatériaux Research (DFG-funded 2021–2024). Visiting Professor for Art and Media Studies at Oldenburg University (2016–2017). He was the Artistic Director of the Leuphana Arts Program (2011–2016), the founding director of Dortmunder U – Centre for Art and Creativity (2009–2011), and has curated exhibitions and festivals in major European venues, incl. transmediale and ISEA2010 RUHR. He holds a PhD in Art History from the University of East Anglia, Norwich/UK, and lectures internationally about the history of modern and contemporary art, media theory, and digital culture. He is the author of Machine Art in the Twentieth Century (MIT Press, 2016), and The Making of Les Immatériaux (Meson Press, 2025).
